Country Fact Sheet: It is a parliamentary republic with a federal structure, located in Central and Western Europe. Berlin, being the capital, is the biggest city in Germany. The official language is German. With the population over 82.3 mln, Germany is 19th on the list of world countries.
Education and Culture: Although kindergartens are on a voluntary basis, 9-year-term school education is obligatory for all children. It is the motherland of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Ludwig van Beethoven, Sebastian Bach, Brahms, and Richard Wagner. Amazingly beautiful paintings by Hans Holbein, Albrecht Dürer, Caspar Friedrich David, Max Ernst have found their places on the walls of numerous museums all over the world. Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, Friedrich Schiller, Thomas Mann, Bertolt Brecht, Heinrich Böll, and Günter Grass are the most famous individuals of German literature. There is no need to describe how well known are the stories by Grimm brothers.
Sports: The sport has an essential role in the German way of life. Germany is 3rd on the list for the number of medals won at the Olympics, and it has hosted the Summer Olympics twice. The most significant type of sports for Germans is football. It is not surprising that German stadiums outnumber all other stadiums for the average number of spectators. This country is also famous for its cars. Outstanding F1 pilot, seven-time world champion Michael Schumacher is also from Germany. There is a general tendency in Germany that they participate in team sports way better. Hockey, handball, volleyball, basketball, and football, of course, are among top-favourite sports in Germany.
